Random Blog Topic Week 1 #1: Dick Button vs. Scott Hamilton, who is better?

11 Sep

This is part one of a six-part series extending the rest of this week of “random blog topics.”  I found this list online and will be working from it.  The numbers were chosen at random by Brandon F., a dear personal friend of mine.

This is topic #4 from the list of 100 linked above.  When I read this topic number, my first honest thought was “Who in the world is Dick Button?”  For those of you not familiar with one or the other of Dick Button and Scott Hamilton, I’ll provide you with a brief biographical sketch.

Button was an Olympic figure skating gold medalist in 1948 and 1952 and world champion from 1948 to 1952.  Since his retirement from skating, Button has been a television commentator for ABC and NBC Olympics coverage for the better part of the last 50 years.  In 2010, he was the lead judge on ABC’s reality skating competition, Skating with the Stars.

Hamilton, meanwhile, was a four-time world champion (1981-84) and one-time Olympic gold medalist (1984).  Following his career, Hamilton went into a career in… you guessed it, commentary for Olympic figure skating.  In 1996, he was the host of the FOX show Skating with Celebrities.  He also survived a bout with a benign brain tumor followed by an aneurysm.

So.  The question remains, who’s better?  My initial thought given that he was the one of the two who I actually knew was to give it to Scott Hamilton.  Having reviewed their credentials side-by-side, however, I’m inclined to say that Dick Button is better.  That’s just one guy’s opinion though.
